"I used to wear my cousins hand-me-downs and now i have built a mansion."

Jagdeep Singh returned from achieving his lifelong dream 30 years after going out to persue it. With 4 floors and a wrap-around balcony, marble flooring and 16 rooms in total Jagdeep has built a mansion in his home town of Dhadawal in Punjab.

At 8yrs old, Jagdeep was left to be the man of the house after his father left India to go and earn a higher living for his family. After sending letters back and fourth, the family lost touch with their father and never heard from him again. “It was weird, scary actually, my father was gone and no-one knew where he was, if he was ever going to come back and why he had stopped getting into contact with us”.

Jagdeep attended the local school in his village of Dhadawal where he did a variety of subjects including maths and English and also P.E. “I loved P.E, especially the game of Kabaddi” said Jagdeep.

Instead of focusing on his education, Jagdeep had to leave his studies and help out on the family’s farm as this was their only source of income. He would wake up at 5 in the morning and go to feed the cows and plant crops. He would then spend the day, looking after the animals and crops and return to his home in the late evening. “It was hard. A lot of the day was manual work and because I was only young it was difficult to do the simple tasks.  It wasn’t all bad though, being out in the open and having such a raw childhood allowed us to explore”.

The family’s main income was from the crops grown on the farm, these would then be sold to the local grocer, who would then sell them in his shop.

“Our farm was our life, it’s how we made a living and it’s also where we got our main source of food from."

"As I was the oldest child, I felt like it was my responsibility to look after my family and keep the farm in good condition." When 18yrs old, Jagdeep left the country and found work in England. “I was told by one of my family members that I could make a real living out of the country and pursue a career”.

When Jagdeep first arrived he did any manual work that he could find. “I worked on the roads for a long time. Building roads and repairing them. It was freezing. I remember wearing three pairs of socks on my feet just to keep them from not freezing up. No matter what the condition, we worked all day and got a half an hour break. But I didn’t care, I was earning a good amount and it enabled me to send money back to my family”.

Jagdeep then gained a job in metal polishing. Throughout his years working for a company he gained the skills and knowledge in the metal polishing industry.

He became a business owner of a metal polishing company. “One of my friends in the industry helped me to set up the business and me and my partner built it up from there.” After 30 years in the industry Harjinder went back to India to build his childhood dream home in February.

The new home has taken 6 months to complete but is now furnished and ready to be lived in. The property has a 15 foot lobby, a dining room, 3 living rooms, a kitchen, a games room and an office. Each bedroom is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and dressing table. There is also a balcony surrounding all around the property looking over land in the nearby areas.

“It is an incredible feeling to just look at it and think 'I have been able to create this with my hard earned money’. To look at where I was and now where I am, it really does bring me pure joy."
